Special Event
For our first Build a Kink Workshop, we’ll be making and customizing paddles. You’ll get a paddle blank, a pile of materials, and enough guidance to leave with something that you can proudly say “I built this!” right before smacking (or being smacked by) someone with it! (You may want to wait to see their reaction before telling them you’re the one who made that evil thing).
In this workshop we’ll talk about how toy makers think through design: weight, shape, surface area, flexibility, grip, edges, finish, and all the small choices that change how a toy feels in the hand and on the body.
Then you’ll get to build.
Decorate it. Wrap the handle. Add grip. Make it beautiful. Make it ominous. Make it look so terrifying that you never actually get to use it… or make it soft and cuddly with a mean side. We support your artistic direction, within reason and basic safety standards.
This is a beginner-friendly workshop. You do not need woodworking experience, toy-making experience, or any prior knowledge beyond a willingness to learn and an ability to not glue yourself to the table. (Ivy has glued Ash to things at least twice… this month… so be careful around them when they have adhesives). (Ivy would like to point out that this was intentional. Sometimes Ash needs to be glued to things for…. reasons.)
We’ll provide the basic materials and walk everyone through the important parts, including:
How paddle shape affects sensation
Why edges and finishes matter
How to make a handle easier to control
What materials are safer to use against skin
What not to add to a toy, even if it looks cool
How to inspect a handmade toy before using it
How to test something new slowly and responsibly
This is not a professional toy-making certification. You will not leave having transformed into a dwarven blacksmith or anything even remotely approaching that (unless, of course, you were already a dwarven blacksmith). You will, however, hopefully leave knowing a little more about how kink toys are designed, what makes them safer or riskier, and how to make a simple paddle that you can call your own.
Feel free to stay the night and join us the next day as we visit the Ren Faire, then return to The Tudor House for the afterparty.
If you have not attended before you must complete the application/vetting process at www.thetudorhouse.org.
