TOPIC: Do you fact check your doctor

Original Starting post for this thread:
In my father's generation, people pretty much accepted what their doctor said as gospel without question. Some # of people in my generation do as well. I personally do not.

It doesn't mean that I don't trust my doctor to "try" to do what's best for me or think that he doesn't mean well. It's more an acknowledgement that he has limited time and less vested interest in my health than I do.

One way this has played out is the automatic discussion of trying to push me into taking a statin when my total cholesterol went barely over 200 (like 204). In my case, my triglicerides were lower than the low end of the normal range and my good cholesterol (HDL) was higher than the high end of the normal range. My bad cholesterol (LDL) was just barely borderline, so it should have been a wash.

No big surprise that my PCP doc was happy to prescribe statins for me for the rest of my life had I not questioned him. This was without first trying any dietary changes or simple inexpensive blood tests, such as Apo B, Lipid Particle size, or Liver panel blood tests.

Anyway, I'd like to think that today's patients better advocate for themselves and other family members, but do people really take advantage of the information at everyone's fingertips these days when it comes to doctor's recommendations?
